Samuel P. Savage diaries, 1770-1795.

Personal diaries kept by Samuel P. Savage of Weston, Mass., 1770-73, 1780-90, 1792, and 1795. Savage, merchant, judge, and member of the Massachusetts Board of War, used his diaries to record daily events such as the weather, wind, constellations, marriages, deaths in his community, sermons preached, and crops planted. Of particular interest are the daily entries during the Revolutionary War. His diaries also include reports of voting returns in Weston, poetry, lists of facts related to Massachusetts and the Revolutionary War, and lists of members of Congress. 1783 diary includes a genealogy of the Savage family. Most of the diaries include interleaved pages of the Massachusetts Almanac which contain annotations of Savage's planting calendar. Many diaries also include newspapers clippings on such subjects as spiritual healing and political activity in the United States.
